Conception of an innovative multimedia guide system for the State Museum of Egyptian Art

The Egyptian Museum (Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst) in Munich is the most extensive museum of its kind in the German-speaking world. The museum, which has exhibits from all periods of Ancient Egypt up to the Coptic period, has set itself the task of making it once again possible to touch and experience those objects.

In the course of the new construction of the museum, DER MEDIENBAYER, in cooperation with Die Werft and Nous Guide, designed a museum guide with a completely new navigation concept. By creating a guide with positioning functions and 3D interactions, the vision of a new museum comes alive. Visitors can chose between different tours (e.g., the »Highlights Tour« or the »World of Gods Tour« specifically designed for children). Additionally, it is possible to select object-specific information in the »Independent Tour«. Thanks to 3D interaction, the visitors can see many objects from all sides, while it also enables them to journey back through time to experience “live” how stone pots were made.

The devices use the awiloc® positioning technology to guide the visitors through the exhibition. On the display, visitors can see their respective locations in a virtual 3D world and view the shortest route to the tour’s next station. The multilingual museum guides provide additional information such as reconstructions, objects of comparison, audio files and videos about the various exhibits. For visually impaired visitors a contrast mode has been set up.
An extensive CMS was made available to the museum for independent content editing.
